DEVELOPMENT OFFICER

About SEP:

SEP is a production company based in New York City that seeks to support, produce and elevate stories that challenge stereotypes in race and sexuality, produced by and featuring a truly diverse cast and crew. Through the medium of film and TV, SEP amplifies these narratives to make real positive and lasting change in the media industry. Since 2018 we’ve created content that has explored the underrepresented human experience, capturing the attention of major festivals, such as the Tribeca Film Festival and Sundance. Our projects have been recognized as the best in their categories, and have been covered in major news outlets, and we aim to keep it that way. We champion new voices, seeking to nurture and foster a new generation of creators who are aiming to change the status quo in our industry and culturally.

Our most recent production was Insomnia, a series that explores Nikhil Rao - a queer Indian-American, book editor who secretly moonlights as an escort in New York City. Insomnia is a half hour, handheld, single-camera dramedy. Taking cues from Master of None, Fleabag, and High Maintenance, the series follows an Indian-American escort in his twenties - Nikhil - a queer, Indian American writer who becomes an escort to support his family. Delving into the themes of sexuality, race, and mental health, the series was covered in Elle, Mashable, Medium, Elle, Them, Broadwayworld, and more, was a finalist for the Sundance Film Festival, received 2 Queerty nominations, and its creator was accepted in the Tribeca Film Festival’s Digital Creator program. Position: Ideal candidates will be motivated by the power of storytelling with a activist lens and will be passionate about SEP’s mission. They will bring an entrepreneurial, strategic, and insightful approach to engaging individual and institutional donors in the organization's work. As a key member of SEP’s senior leadership team, the Development Officer will plan and organize fundraising activities, manage the development budget, and steward meaningful and lasting relationships on a local, state, and national level. This is a new position within the organization that offers an opportunity to build out all of the essential development functions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Garner financial support and development deals by leveraging existing relationships with networks, investors, distributors, and more for SEP’s portfolio of Creators and projects.

  • Direct and expand all aspects of SEP s development activities, including individual and

    major donor cultivation and stewardship, annual and special gift campaigns, fundraising events, institutional giving from foundations, corporations, and government agencies; and possibly begin designing a planned giving program.

  • Serve as major gifts solicitor, cultivating relationships with existing supporters as well as identifying, cultivating, and soliciting new supporters, networks, distributors, etc.

  • Identify new and prospective foundations, individual investors, and public funders that can support SEP and its growing portfolio of projects and creators

  • Establish and oversee annual fundraising calendars, including deadlines for grant reporting and applications

  • Meet weekly to discuss and develop strategies with the core team.

  • Work directly with the Assistant Development Strategist to apply and garner funding for the organization through foundations, incubators, networks, and more.

  • Develop proposals and budgets to produce funder reports, and with communications staff to ensure representation of donor support in appropriate media.

Qualifications:

  • 3-6 years of experience in fundraising and grant management, including but not limited to visionary fundraising strategy design and development; preparation of financials; tracking deliverables; grant preparation and reporting

  • Demonstrated track record in generating revenue from a variety of sources including major gifts, government, foundations, and corporations

  • Exceptional organizational skills and ability to balance multiple priorities and deadlines in a constantly changing and fast-paced environment

  • Experience cultivating internal and external constituencies and building long-term relationships with diverse stakeholders to achieve broad, mutually-satisfying goals

  • Excellent interpersonal communication and persuasive communication skills, including public speaking abilities

  • Demonstrated commitment to SEP’s mission and knowledge of arts and cultural sector opportunities

  • Computer proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Drive, social media, and fundraising databases; experience with Salesforce (preferred)

  • Undergraduate degree required (advanced degree a plus)

  • A demonstrated track record of developing and implementing successful strategic fundraising plans for projects with budgets of $500K or more

  • A thorough understanding of private foundations and changing dynamics in philanthropy; emerging opportunities in crowdfunding; and knowledge of arts and cultural institutions, and non-profit networks

  • Interest in the subject matter and ability to be facile in describing our programs to varied audiences
